Resino adds CNC Machinery to Expand In-house Capabilities

At Resino we are always looking for ways to improve the services we offer, and we have recently added to our diverse in-house capabilities with a new CNC router machine.

This great bit of kit allows us to cut with extreme precision a range of substrates, including (of course) hardwoods and epoxy resin, as well as sheet materials like MDF or ply for furniture structures also composite materials, and even metals.

Introducing a CNC machine enables us to streamline our workflow and add both 2D and 3D cutting of our products.

What is a CNC machine?

The abbreviation CNC stands for Computer Numerical Control, a way of a computer controlling a range of equipment (in our case a router) by way of pre-programmed software which directs the complex machinery to a precision almost impossible to achieve manually.

What Will We Use Our CNC For?

We are excited about the huge potential that this new equipment offers and we are yet to test its full capabilities, however here are a few ways in which we will be utilising the machine:

Flattening and shaping resin tables

This may not be the most exciting of applications however, it is most certainly a very important part of the process when producing furniture.

Previously this could be a very time-consuming job, whereas now the machine can work in the background, enabling the team to carry on with other work.

We often produce work with a more standard edge profile - square, round over or chamfer, but we will now be able to offer a whole variety of more complex profiles and shaping.

Engraving and Branding

Adding detailed logos or intricate patterns to items is a doddle for a CNC machine. This means we can add branding or inlays to any product or surface, in a variety of materials or create voids to be filled with resin.

Moulds and 3D Cutting

Working with epoxy resin we often need to create moulds for the resin to be poured into. These can be as simple as a rectangular ‘tray’ for a river table, or a more advanced shape such as a 3D object that needs a silicone negative for us to cast with resin.

Panels, Worktops and Sheet Work

When we produce an item such as a kitchen worktop or a frame for a bartop there can be a lot of double-checking measurements and working with hand tools or our table saw to cut all the relevant pieces.

Creating the design files and sending these to the CNC will reduce any human error and also reduce material waste as we can nest shapes within defined parameters, such as standard-sized timber sheets.
